  • Xiaomi Smart Scale

In addition to the actual weight measurement, these scales also calculate the following body parameters by calculating the electrical resistance of tissues:

    • body mass index
    • body fat level
    • body type
    • muscle mass
    • bone mass
    • body water level
    • visceral fat
    • BX
    • body score (in points)

All this data can only be viewed through the Mi Fit application on your smartphone.

    Device overview

So, in the first part of my review, I provided the official parameters about this device, now I want to look at all this in more detail.

The scales have a laconic design, white color, and will suit any interior. They don't look massive. I liked the solution with a hidden frameless display. The numbers on the scoreboard and the scoreboard itself can only be seen during direct weighing (hence some guests wondering which side to stand on these scales J).

    Invisible display

Despite the fact that the surface is made of white plastic, the scales are not easily soiled. Very easy to wipe with a regular damp cloth.

The legs are made of rubber, have a fairly large area, and do not slip on the floor, which ensures accurate measurements. They are soft to the touch, slightly movable, which compensates for uneven floors.

The presence of a light sensor is pleasantly pleasing - the brightness of the display depends on the external light. During the day, in bright sunshine, the numbers on the display will be very bright; in the dark, on the contrary, the brightness will be lower.

    Rubber feet

    Battery compartment

In order to select a unit of measurement - kg or pound, you need to move the slider on the bottom panel of the scale.

Pairing the scales with the device is quite simple via Bluetooth - after installing the application on your smartphone and registering, you just need to step on the scales and follow the instructions on the smartphone screen. And then you can weigh yourself at any time and all your measurements will be saved on your smartphone. You can create an account for several users on one device at once.

    Software

WITH software not everything is so smooth. When I first bought these scales, the software interface, in my opinion, was more convenient and logical. But where would we be without these updates, which discourage anyone from using the program.

After the update, the interface became inconvenient; to get a normal table of your parameters, you need to click somewhere again, go to the main menu, etc. In addition, now the graph of changes and achievements is built not on the basis of body weight, in general the main parameter, but on points, which sometimes do not at all reflect what you are striving for. However, you can still get used to innovations.

Software interface on the tablet screen

But in general, it’s convenient to have the history of your measurements at your fingertips in order to constantly be aware and see how you are moving towards your goal.

How to use Xiaomi Mi Body Fat Smart Scale

To use the program, you need to indicate your weight, gender and height. Apparently, this is needed precisely for more accurate calculations of parameters through metal conductors.

For correct weighing with additional parameters the body needs to turn on the program, stand barefoot with dry feet on the scales so that the feet are on four metal electrodes and do not move.

We stand like this until the color indicator on the scales is filled (white lines). Now you can see your parameters and weight on your smartphone screen. On the scale display itself, you can only see your weight.

    MiFit app and weighing results

If you just want to weigh yourself, don't wait until the indicator on the scale is full.

It is better to always weigh yourself in the morning on an empty stomach at the same time without clothes, then the parameters will be most accurate.

In fact, it is not necessary to turn on the program on your smartphone when weighing; it is important that Bluetooth works; I noticed that it still records the values obtained even if the program is not turned on. But sometimes, without turning on the program, the results are not saved and are not synchronized. Therefore, just in case, I advise you to first go to the Mi Fit application.

There is also a function for weighing the child - you first step on the scale without the child, then take the child in your arms and the application will show the difference in weight before and after - this will be the weight of the baby.

Pros and cons of the device

In general, I am satisfied with the Xiaomi Mi Body Fat Smart Scale.

I would like to point out the advantages:

    • Nice design, frameless display.
    • Possibility of measuring a large number of body parameters.
    • Availability official application, where you can remember all parameters, including the weighing date. It is very convenient and interesting to sometimes look at a graph of how your weight has changed over time and how much you weighed, for example, six months ago.
    • You can set yourself a goal and monitor its implementation - a kind of motivation. It’s nice to see clearly, for example, how weight is reduced and the percentage of body fat drops.
    • Weighing accuracy.

    Minuses:

    • The measurement accuracy is not 50 grams, as the manufacturer claims, but 100, since the values are shown on the display with an accuracy of 100 grams. It is unclear where these 50 grams came from. The greater the mass, the greater the error. I noticed that it can grow up to 200 grams.
    • Software instability - sometimes after an update the program did not start at all.
    • Software update not available better side. I have already written about this above.
    • Inability to change user account manually. The point is that the application independently determines who is weighing in this moment based on the originally recorded weight. This is convenient, but it may be that two people have the same weight. If the application has two accounts with the same weight, then it will confuse and record data not always for the user who weighed himself. It is impossible to forcefully choose where to write the result. The application begins to distinguish between users with a difference in weight of about 3-4 kg.
    • It is not possible to monitor parameters offline. On the device itself you will only see your weight. Other parameters are not shown on the display. That is, if a person who is not registered in the application wants to weigh himself, in order to get all the parameters, you need to add him to the application. This is inconvenient for one-time weighing.
    • Doubts about the correctness of measuring other parameters. However, any scales using this technology(bioimpedance test). This applies, in particular, to the level of water in the body - everyone I know who weighed themselves on these scales turns out to be suffering from dehydration. The water level is insufficient for everyone. The definition of body type is also funny - a person with good muscle mass and visually athletic, without a hint of a protruding belly, is characterized by the application as fat. All parameters are averaged, so you can approximately trust in their reliability, however, useful information You can still get it.

Weigh-in data for professional athletes, pregnant women, or other people with special needs may have some inaccuracies.

The manufacturer warned about this, at least I found this information on the seller’s official website. So the last minus can be treated more tolerantly.

    My review, rating and conclusion

Despite some shortcomings, Xiaomi scales I recommend Mi Body Fat Smart Scale for purchase. Before purchasing, I studied the competitors and concluded that this device is optimal in terms of price and quality. For scales, their cost is quite high. I bought them for 4,000 rubles, now their average price is about 1,000 rubles cheaper.

There were no technical failures during the year. I think they will last for more than one year.

The Xiaomi Mi Body Fat Smart Scale will be useful for those who play sports and monitor their health.

My rating is 7 out of 10.

Xiaomi continues to “close the blind spots” in its assortment, simultaneously releasing screwdrivers, curtains, everything in a row, and then suddenly for some reason it was necessary to “go back” and make another scale. We invite you to see why?

By saying “nothing new” in the title, I meant nothing new for the market, but in relation to Xiaomi, the device was, of course, “innovative”: besides weight and mass index, there is a lot more here.

Comparing with competitors, of course, is futile. Any argument will still be harsh: “but it’s cheaper,” and this is fair, because everything that Xiaomi offers us now in 2017, in the second scale, is already familiar from Runtastic, Garmin, Withings models, but before it cost about 10 -12 thousand, and now two to three times cheaper.

Like any analyzer scale, Xiaomi Smart Scale 2 is addressed to those who want to lose or gain weight, for which additional interrelated metrics have been introduced. Among the main ones:

Bone mass, or "skeletal mineral composition"

A generalized statistical indicator indicating the strength/weakness of the skeleton. It is calculated in kilograms and is at the level:

The indicator is relatively static in the long term, but with age the bones become weaker, and in older people the numbers may be slightly different, which indicates a lack of minerals in the bones. Also, indicators in pregnant women will most likely differ due to the loss of calcium during gestation.

    Unsegmented muscle mass

Scales “estimate” the weight of all muscles in the body: both smooth and skeletal. Indirectly indicates problems with excess weight, since loss of muscle mass = gain of fat.

    Fat level

One of the key indicators for scales in principle. The metric is calculated as a percentage, and elevated rates are an indicator of long-term problems, since obesity is often accompanied by diseases of the cardiovascular system, endocrine system, and a number of others. Averaged normal indicators are easy to Google.

    Hydration

The parameter is also subject to the “logic” of the product: a decrease in the body’s hydration level can lead to fat gain, so in the context of the device the metric is understandable. The normal level of hydration for an adult is considered to be 50-60%.

All information that is read by the new scales is displayed in the proprietary “Mi fit” application. It is partially Russified, and, say, the decoding of some metrics is given in Russian, and some in English.

In addition to the data already listed, here you will find familiar parameters: body mass index, of course, weight, and also offers a “summary analysis” of the data - body assessment.

    Bioimpedance analysis

Scales analyze body composition by calculating the electrical resistance of body tissues, or bioimpedansometry, which is widespread in clinical practice and, more recently, in consumer use.

Despite the fact that the method is widely known, it can be considered confirmed, and in a number you can find references to the fact that bioimpedance is the most accurate diagnostic method, there are still questions about accuracy. How to check? - No way.

In devices of this kind, we are asked to rely on faith, intuition, etc., as well as to draw indirect conclusions about accuracy based on other metrics: say, they accurately determine weight, why would they lie about something else?

    New design

Actually, bioimpedance as a technology has also led to some changes in the design of the device: now it is not smooth glass, but a plastic surface with large metal conductors on each edge. You need to stand on them.

In the center of the design is a laconic “Mi” logo.

Despite the new features and new elements, the scales have become thinner and lighter: they now weigh about 1.6 kg versus 2 kg of the first version.

The scales rise from the floor on stable rubber feet: they are “pressable”, soft, and therefore can take into account some surface unevenness, and also do not slip!

The display of numbers has changed: in the first version, the weight “popped up” in the form of dots, and here - “sticks”, but the display retained its best qualities: it is not visible, no frames.

The new scales run on AAA batteries (AA in the first version), the compartment for which is located at the bottom of the device:

To synchronize the scales with your smartphone, you will have to stand on them the first time you connect, however, all the necessary instructions will be given by the application itself.

As a result, it’s worth saying that Xiaomi has once again shaken a niche: this time – the niche of smart scales. Indeed: - an inexpensive and practical alternative to all analyzer scales available on the market in this design will certainly appeal not only to fans of the brand, but also to those who hear “Xiaomi” for the first time from this note.

Every girl dreamed of combining two extremes at least once: eating sweets and other favorite harmful things for her figure and keeping herself in shape. Mi body composition scale smart scales are a modern alternative to grandma’s scales. We'll look at what this device is in this review.

I would like to start the review with the fact that at the beginning of its activities, the company specialized in the production of smartphones and components for them. Today, developers have stepped far forward, providing smart watch, bracelets, all kinds of cables, tablets and much more.

Most recently, the Xiaomi company celebrated its anniversary in the IT market. On this occasion, a festive conference was organized, where the developer presented five new devices aimed at different industries. Two of them work in tandem: the smart bracelet “”, and the no less smart “Mi Body” scale, which will be discussed below.

Overview of the main characteristics of the Xiaomi mi smart scale:

    • Minimum weighing range – 5 kg, maximum limit 150-170 kg
    • Weight of scales – 1.9kg
    • Smart scales Xiaomi mi smart scale are made of white plastic and tempered glass
    • Compatible with Android version 4.3 and higher, and IOS version no lower than 7

    Equipment

After brief description characteristics, let's review what is in the box along with the smart scales.

The box itself looks quite simple. On it you can only see the logo and nothing more. Along with the device, there are four batteries and instructions in Chinese.

    Materials and appearance

White scales look stylish and simple. Manufacturers are distinguished by minimalism, and this device is no exception. There are no protruding parts, pretentious gold inscriptions, only in the center you can see the neat “Mi” logo. The top panel is made of tempered glass. Other elements made of impact-resistant plastic. The sensors are made of steel. The screen is located above the logo and is not visible when the device is turned off. The case itself is made of high quality plastic.

The legs of the scales are “shod” in a rubber coating, so they do not slip. The battery of the device is designed for 4 batteries. The developers claim that their work will last for a whole year. There are no buttons on the scales; on the back there is a slot for inserting batteries. The dimensions do not allow us to call them bulky or heavy. There is nothing to complain about.

Under the cover there is a switch for units of measurement. Xiaomi scales have:

    • European pounds
    • Chinese jini, which are equal to approximately 500g
    • Kilograms familiar to Russian users

Glass deserves special attention. Its thickness is several mm, which is quite decent. On their page, the developers have allocated a separate paragraph for it. Data is displayed using white LEDs. Under the sensors you can see a light-sensitive sensor. The brightness of the display is adjusted in auto mode and depends on the amount of light in the room. Please note that the weight limit does not allow the use of smart scales for those whose weight is more than 150kg.

Control measurements on the floor from different materials(parquet, linoleum and tiles) showed errors on 01 and 02, in one direction and the other. These are quite acceptable results, including for classical scales.

    Connecting a device

To connect the Chinese Xiaomi mi smart scale, you need to install the “Mi Fit” application; it will also be required if you purchased the “Mi Band” bracelet. There are no buttons on the device; to turn them on, you need to stand on a smart scale. They will determine the parameters and offer to create new entry. The scale and smartphone don't have to be kept close to each other all the time. The data is saved automatically and will be transferred to the smartphone as soon as the latter is within a radius of 10 meters. To synchronize with your smartphone, you need to launch the application, turn on Bluetooth and step on the scale.

During weighing, you need to ensure that the surface is as smooth as possible. When there is an elevation, the indicators “lie” by about one and a half kilograms. Weighing yourself daily will help you plan your diet. Since the screen is backlit, you can weigh yourself even at night.

    Family scales

How can one gadget be a family gadget? It turns out it's quite simple. Device in automatic mode determines which family member stepped on the scale, saving the history of each individual. When the measurement results do not meet the established parameters, the application immediately prompts you to register a new user and enter the following information:

    • Number of complete years

Using the data obtained, smart scales will be able to calculate your body mass index. All measurements are saved in history and collected in a single graph. A list is displayed below. When you click on a specific measurement, a specific point in the resulting graph is activated.

Important: with a slight difference in weight, about 2 kg, this will not be enough for the scale to recognize two different people. If the weight increases by more than 3.5kg, the scale will ask which user is weighing. If the weight of two people is close in value, you will have to enter the weighing results manually. This is not very convenient. It is much easier to link the scales to two smartphones.

    • Weighing weight range: 5-150 kg
    • Error: 0.1 kg with a mass of 5-50 kg, 0.2 kg with a mass of 50-150 kg
    • Dimensions: 300 x 300 x 28.2 mm
    • Weight: 1.9 kg
    • White color
    • Housing materials: ABS plastic, tempered glass
    • Power: 4 batteries or AA batteries
    • Supported platforms: Android 4.4 and above, iOS 7 and above

The full name of the scales is Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale, but hereinafter I will call them simply – Xiaomi Scale, it’s more convenient and shorter.

New accessory Xiaomi presented at the beginning of April at the next presentation, where new TVs, an updated budget smartphone Redmi and a couple more interesting things.

The topic of smart bathroom scales is popular today, not as popular as pedometer bracelets and something similar, but still. On the Internet you can find many models of scales, both simply with memory for several values and calculation of excess fat tissue and other parameters, as well as full-fledged “smart scales” that can display and store all the same in a proprietary application on a smartphone.

The site has a review of the Withings WS-50 smart scales from Zhenya Vildyaev. If you have not studied this type of electronics or are familiar with it only by hearsay, you can read this material.

In order to eliminate in advance some questions regarding the capabilities of Xiaomi Scale, I would like to remind you that the Chinese company Xiaomi has taken up expansion in the last year or two model range products produced under their own brand. If back in 2012 Xiaomi was associated with smartphones and simple accessories for them, today this brand has significantly expanded its model range. Now Xiaomi is a smartphone, tablet, action camera, pedometer, blood pressure monitor, external batteries, various cables, an air purifier, TVs, set-top boxes and routers, a smart lamp, headsets and headphones, external speakers and other interesting things. Many users expect incredible functionality from every new Xiaomi product at a very low cost, as well as highest quality and absence of marriage. In part, Xiaomi themselves raised the bar so high, starting to conquer the market with excellent smartphones at very low prices. You need to understand that with the expansion of the electronics model range, the company cannot maintain the same level of quality (in every sense, from the quality of workmanship to the quality of the software and the capabilities provided by the device) for all products. This is the reason why Xiaomi's pedometer disappoints some users. For 1,500-2,000 rubles with delivery from China, they expect to receive an accessory that works like a watch with software capabilities at the level of Jawbone UP or Fitbit and... they don’t get it. Xiaomi certainly has a cool pedometer, but this is just a simple accessory for the money, and you can expect from it the same capabilities that more famous brands at a price three times higher, just strange.

The situation with scales is approximately the same, but here you need to remember one more important parameter - the mass of this device. What does mass have to do with it? The fact is that the Xiaomi Scale scales are very cheap in their base (price in official store is 99 yuan, which is approximately 800 rubles), before reaching a user not from China, they go through two additional price barriers. The first is resellers from whom online stores and the same sellers on aliexpress and other sites purchase goods, and the second is a lot of scales. They weigh more than two kilograms and, moreover, are much larger than a box with a smartphone, so the cost of shipping such an accessory from China is much higher than the cost of shipping a bracelet or smartphone. I will tell you below how all this affected the price, and now let’s move on to studying the scales.

    Contents of delivery

The scales are delivered in a simple cardboard box, this is ordinary soft cardboard, and not the hard and durable packaging of other Xiaomi products. In addition to the scales, there are four AA batteries inside the box.

    Design, body materials

The scales are white on both sides, looking simple and beautiful. There is nothing superfluous on the case: no inserts, embossed or protruding parts with logos or other visual debris, only a neat mi inscription in the center. The screen is located in the upper area from the logo; in an inactive state it is not visible.

The body of the scale is made of high-quality plastic and has four movable “legs”.

The front side is a thick layer of white tempered glass.

It’s difficult to find fault with the quality of workmanship or design of the Xiaomi Scale - the body looks reliable, and the declared maximum weight for these scales is not too large - up to 150 kilograms. The design is also good - a beautiful, neat electronic device that will look appropriate in almost any interior.

There are no visible buttons on the body of the scale, just a compartment for four AA batteries hidden behind a plastic cover on the back.

If you remove the cover, you can see the switch above this compartment. It is responsible for the format for displaying mass - Chinese system of measures, pounds or kilograms.

    Dimensions and weight

The weight of the scale is almost 2 kilograms (1.9), dimensions are 300 x 300 x 28.2 mm. The dimensions of a typical bathroom scale cannot be called too heavy or too large.

    Using scales

To weigh yourself on the scales, you don’t need to turn them on or activate them in any way, just stand on the surface and stand for a couple of seconds, Xiaomi Scale will estimate the weight and then show it on the screen. The weight is displayed on the screen with backlight, so you can weigh yourself in secret from your relatives at night, and you won’t need to use a flashlight; you step on the scale and see your weight even in complete darkness.

As stated on the Xiaomi website, the scales measure mass very accurately and give minimal error during repeated measurements, up to 100 grams for a mass of up to 50 kilograms and up to 200 grams for a mass of 50 to 150 kilograms. In practice, my error during repeated measurements fluctuates around 200-300 grams.

Working with the Mi Fit application

The Xiaomi Scale works with the proprietary Mi Fit application, which is also used for the Xiaomi pedometer. In general, this program can be downloaded from App Store And Google Play, but just a week ago the version in these stores was far behind the current one, so if you downloaded the program on Google Play, you simply would not see the possibilities of its connection with the scales. I downloaded Mi Fit version 1.4.641 and it worked with the scale without problems, so I recommend you download it or more new version, if the option from Google Play and App Store “does not see” the scales.

To connect the scales with the application, you just need to launch Mi Fit on your smartphone, turn on Bluetooth, and step on the scales. The program itself will find the device and, if necessary, update its firmware.

The application is very simple - with its help you can see your weight, the difference in weight between different weighings, a graph of weight changes, as well as the BMI (Body Mass Index) value.

In your profile settings you can add relatives and friends. When one of them weighs himself, the program itself will record the result and link it to a specific person, based on weight and BMI value. If two people have similar parameters, the next time they weigh themselves, the application will ask you to indicate which of these people just measured their weight in order to correctly link the data.

You can also specify a goal in the settings, for example, the desired body weight, and with each next weigh-in, the application will show how many kilograms you have left to lose or accumulate to the desired value.

    Conclusion

Xiaomi has created a beautiful and simple bathroom scale. Personally, I don’t see any special features here that would allow us to call the Xiaomi Scale a truly “smart” scale. The proprietary application shows basic information about weight and allows you to store this data, as well as the BMI values of various family members and acquaintances, but nothing more. In the case of Xiaomi Scale, you do not receive any recommendations or additional data.

In the Xiaomi Scale online store they cost 99 yuan, which is approximately 800 rubles at the exchange rate at the beginning of June. However, you most likely will not be able to buy scales for this money, like almost all other products of the company. On sites like aliexpress and in online stores in Russia, the price for Xiaomi Scale is almost the same - around 3,000-4,000 rubles. This is due to what I already wrote about at the beginning of the material - resellers from whom sellers on Ali and online stores purchase, set their price, and then it increases by another 1,000-1,500 rubles due to delivery. Therefore, in my opinion, there is not much difference between buying these scales in an online store in Russia or on Ali. The scales themselves are interesting, especially if you are a fan of the Xiaomi brand and love their products - everything here is on the level, and Xiaomi Scale copes with the stated capabilities perfectly.

What is Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale? is a “smart” scale from Xiaomi that is capable of not only weighing its owner, but also synchronizing all data via Bluetooth with an iPhone or Android application Mi Fit. Synchronization takes place automatically, and if necessary, you can add other users to the program.

    Fast passage:

    1. Photo: Xiaomi Smart Scale

So, the scales are made in a classic style, the body is entirely made of ABS plastic, and the top panel is made of glass

Everything is white - in the center is the Mi logo and nothing else

At first glance, some people don’t quite understand what it is, because there is neither a display nor elements characteristic of scales

But as soon as you go to Xiaomi Smart Scale, the numbers immediately appear

    Oh, I've gained 5 kg!

There is information on the back.

    2. Characteristics

    • Minimum weight - 5 kg
    • Maximum weight - 150 kg
    • Acceptable units of measurement - kg, pounds
    • Scale value (min) - 50 grams
    • Stated error 5-50 kg - 100 grams
    • Stated error 50-150 kg - 200 grams
    • Compatible with Android devices- from version 4.0
    • Compatible with iOS - from iOS versions 7.0 and higher, including iPhone 4s, 5, 5C, 5S, 6, 6Plus, 6S Plus, 7 and 7 Plus.

    3. Review of Xiaomi Mi Smart Scale

I've been using these scales for quite some time. They replaced the old scales that had been trampled by a child (of course, it’s so easy to jump on them). What pleased me was the build quality. The scales are made just perfectly - a beautiful white body, there are no backlashes or squeaks.

They work on the principle of inserting batteries and forgetting. That is, just install the application in, connect to via Bluetooth and that’s it. Now the weight will be taken into account automatically and exactly when you need it. It is very important!

Look - you step on the scale, take out your iPhone and open the application, only then does it count the weight. No false positives, as long as the scales are somewhere in the room, the iPhone is lying on the table nearby - no! For example, someone from your family may come up and weigh themselves, and this weight will not be automatically added to the application. This is a huge plus.

Also in the native application you can see your weight statistics and compare it with other people around the world. Speaking of the application, it is not perfect, but quite convenient.

    About bugs

During all the time of use, I noticed only one feature - the scales show much more weight if they were lifted from the floor and then placed on the floor. That is, in essence, if you picked up the Xiaomi Smart Scale from the floor in order to sweep away the dust under it, then, after returning the scale to its place, you need to stand up once for automatic calibration and you will see another weight that will be greater than yours. After this, you can weigh yourself with peace of mind - all the “fat” displayed on the white screen is yours alone!

    4. Connect to iPhone 7 Plus

If you just bought a scale and want to start it up, don’t be alarmed; this process is simple and won’t take you more than 2 minutes of time:
