Free video editor how to use the program. Video editor VSDC Free: program overview. How to Apply Effects and Add Transitions in VSDC

Fact - we all need video editing solutions from time to time. However, the most ideal type to use is something else entirely.

You see, there have been endless debates about paid and free video editors. While most people would prefer the free one, it turns out that the real features are hidden in the paid versions.

I think about it. Although you can mention many free options, most of them end up being useless. They usually provide very limited capabilities that are usually unable to consistently produce decently edited videos.

And just when you think you've luckily stumbled upon another one with impressive features, you suddenly find yourself stuck with watermarks and the like for a long time. Then, to make things even worse, they'll probably throw in a couple of annoying advertisements as well.

From limited trial periods to unfinished video outputs, you name it, I've tried it all when it comes to free editors. And to be honest, I have been repeatedly frustrated in finding a reliable solution in many cases.

So, I have to admit that I wasn't very happy about VSDC Free Video Editor when I came across it. I thought it would be the same old story with a different title. But surprisingly, everything turned out contrary to my expectations...

VSDC Free Video Editor Review: Review

Developed by Flash-Integro LLC, it is essentially a non-linear video editing solution for video, audio and images.

What does it mean?

Well, if you've tried out a few standard video editors, you must have noticed the same old media layout structure in a linear editing template. But VSDC, on the other hand, takes a different non-linear approach. You can set any combination or sequence while working on your video.

For example, you can place videos directly opposite each other for side-by-side viewing, or stack one on top of the other for a picture-in-picture setup. And that is not all. There are many additional parameters, which you can customize, such as the shape and position of the media.

But here's the best part about it. It's absolutely free. The system will not block you after some time to force an update.

Now let's be honest. We've seen plenty of "free" video editing tools hide behind this fact, only to hit you with a warning after installation. They usually paste ugly watermarks on your media to advertise their brands. Or perhaps force you to install additional apps that they partner with.

Fortunately, free video editor VSDC is not included in the package. It doesn't announce itself to the world with watermarks or introduce additional applications. What you see is basically what you get.

And speaking of which, it looks and feels like a truly professional instrument. The interface contains many editing components that allow you to merge, split, cut, rotate, scale, crop and much more. You can also do things like adding subtitles and shapes, hiding elements, blending, color correction, blurring, and placing filters in Instagram style.

All this is possible for a wide range of video formats and codecs, including mainstream ones like AVI and MP4, as well as non-traditional versions like SWF and RM. Subsequent output options are also extensive, and you can even choose to create DVD videos using the disc burning feature.

However, VSDC is not just about free software. There is an option to upgrade to the PRO version, which costs $19.99 per year.

But this will only be necessary if you need masking, sub-pixel precision and video stabilization features, as well as hardware acceleration to create videos much faster. Our main interest is this moment- this is a free version.

So, is VSDC really free? software video editing software can meet our expectations? How powerful are its capabilities? And how can it generate income if it is free to use?

Well, let's find out. This review of the free VSDC video editor covers all critical issues- its features, editing tools, monetization model, as well as its overall suitability.

VSDC Free Video Editor Review: Features

System requirements

Admittedly, the biggest problem with video editors is the fact that they all require insanely vast PC resources to operate. It's virtually impossible for you to edit solid HD video without computer components like a gaming platform.

So of course I was very curious about system requirements for the free video editor VSDC. And it turns out that the minimum you need to run the software without problems is:

  • Microsoft DirectX 9.0c or later
  • 50 MB of disk space for installation
  • 256 MB RAM
  • Display 1024×768 pixels in 16 bits of color
  • Intel or AMD chipset with clock frequency not less than 1.5 GHz
  • Windows OS (XP SP3 or later)

Now wait a minute. Does this mean you can edit videos on an old PC? Interestingly, yes - a standard PC can comfortably host and run this software. In fact, it only takes up 200MB of space on your local disk.

And when it comes to operating systems, these are the supported ones:

  • Windows 10
  • Windows 8
  • Windows 7
  • Windows Vista
  • Windows XP SP3

Sorry, Mac users. You may need to check later if they have released a compatible version. Let's hope they do eventually.

Concerning Windows users, let's see how it actually works on your computer...

User friendliness

When you launch the app, you'll notice that the main interface is dark with clear labels on the tools. And to help you figure it all out, the system greets you with a pop-up that essentially walks you through the process of opening a new project, starting the editing phase, and exporting the project.

However, you don't have to go through all of this. I found the overall interface to be surprisingly simple and straightforward.

Starting a project, for example, is as simple as choosing screen capture, video capture, content import, slideshow creation, or empty project. You will see all these options in the projects tab that opens after the tutorial pops up.

If you need additional help, you can access Find out the main function » option below. It contains additional pointers about elements such as:

  • 3D pro charts
  • Multimedia combiner
  • Waveform
  • Chroma key
  • UHD and HD
  • Mixing
  • Video effects

Now let's face it. It may take some time for a newbie to get used to everything here. But I think that's what we should expect from a software solution with such a set of tools. At least the learning curve isn't as steep as we've seen with Adobe Premiere.

When it comes to the editing process itself, I admit that I haven't had any problems so far. Progress has been smooth all along. However, it is worth noting that the overall performance of the software depends on the hardware resources of your PC.

For example, rendering speed increases slightly when upgrading hardware components. It's not the fastest we've seen, but it's good enough for a free tool. Only Pro users get optimized speeds thanks to the hardware acceleration feature that VSDC unlocks after the update.

Fortunately, this change does not affect video quality in any way. I was impressed that the free VSDC video editor can support HD and UHD output resolutions. In fact, it can even produce H265/HEVC, which is a popular codec that compresses file size without sacrificing quality.

Editing options

Video Capture Tool

The video capture tool connects VSDC to all cameras connected to your computer. You can shoot videos directly through IP cameras and webcams, and then save or customize them using the editor.

Screen Capture Tool

A screen capture tool comes in handy when you need to prepare detailed video tutorials showing your PC's display. Essentially, it prepares footage of your activity on your computer monitor. You can then use the editor to customize the resulting video accordingly.

DVD Burning Tool

Perhaps you would like to watch your videos on a DVD player. Well, that's basically what you use.

Tool DVD recording allows you to save the DVD version of your video directly to a compatible disc in your PC's optical drive.

Video Converter

The video conversion tool controls the conversion process, allowing you to convert a video file from one format to another. Additionally, you can use it to combine clips into one file or split one into multiple videos.

It goes without saying that YouTube is by far the largest video directory on the Internet. So, of course, it makes sense to provide a tool that basically links the app directly to YouTube to help you easily upload videos right after editing.

Moreover, you can also export and publish videos to Vimeo, Twitter, Instagram and Facebook.

Create 3D diagrams

Free video VSDC Editor goes beyond basic video editing to help users improve their professional video presentations. You can use the 3D charts feature to create a funnel, point, pyramid, scatter line, pie chart, overall bar and more - as part of your final video.

Blend modes and Instagram-like filters

By now you've probably experienced color mixing in photos. Well, it turns out that you can also play with this feature while editing videos on VSDC. In fact, it also offers the same powerful effects as Instagram filters—with one click you can adjust temperature, contrast, or grayscale levels.

Supported media formats

Subpixel accuracy

VSDC Pro uses sub-pixel precision when placing or positioning elements in a video scene. Consequently, the quality of the footage is maintained even after adjusting angles, skew or introducing other visual effects.

Disguise

The video editing process sometimes involves removing or hiding certain objects such as watermarks, and VSDC Pro provides a masking feature to do just that. You can even blur faces to hide the identity of the people in the video.

Video stabilization tool

Have you ever filmed a video while driving only to end up with an annoyingly shaky clip? This is especially true for drones and smartphones.

To help you fix the problem, VSDC Pro provides a video stabilization tool. This largely eliminates frame shake for smoother footage.

Who should consider using VSDC Free Video Editor?

Unfortunately, most free video editing software available on the Internet provide extremely basic features that would only be ideal for small, beginner projects. The free VSDC video editor, however, is one of the few that provides the full range of features without significant limitations. It's a pretty solid tool that won't ask you to pay or add watermarks to your videos.

However, anyone can use this software - from beginners to established experts in the field. graphic design. However, I bet that its main user base consists of people who regularly post videos on social media. They will surely appreciate it free editor, which combines unlimited 4K video editing with social media downloaders.

VSDC Free Video Editor for Windows – a free editor that offers professional functionality for video and audio editing. The program is an alternative to a paid editor Sony Vegas Pro, which we wrote about.

In our review we will tell you what this editor can do, what formats it works with, what basic and professional functions the program has.

Download and Install

You can download the program on the official website at download section. Pay attention to the bitness of your system - and download the exe file for your OS. Find out what bit depth your operating system(x32 or x64), can be from .

Run the installation file and follow the prompts until the installation is complete. At the end the program will update the Visual C++ libraries for correct operation utilities.

System requirements

Typically, professional video editors are demanding of computer hardware. The VSDC developers specifically created a program that will run without any problems on low-power computers.

For the utility to work you need:

  • processor with a frequency of 1.5 Hz;
  • 256 MB RAM;
  • about 50 MB of free disk space;
  • DirectX 9.0c installed.

And it's all. Compared to Sony Vegas, the requirements are very affordable. To use the Sony Vegas editor you need multi-core processor with a frequency of at least 2 Hz, 4 GB of RAM (and generally 8 GB is recommended) and at least 500 MB of disk space.

The VSDC editor will work even on the most budget laptops for $200.

First meeting

This is the interface that opens after the first launch of the program. The editor is entirely in Russian, so it will be easier for beginners to work. And in general, according to many professional reviewers (Remontka, iXBT), you can even work with the program “at random” - and it will still work.

The program description says that VSDC is a non-linear video editor. The developers clearly explain what this means.

The non-linearity of video processing in VSDC Video Editor is similar to the non-linearity of image editing in Photoshop. That is, the installation process does not go strictly from A to B, but may have a bunch of branches. Layers have been created for this purpose, the ability to overlay different objects on top of each other, mixing colors, creating transparency on different layers, etc.

If we click on create an empty project, we will be asked to configure it: give a name, enter information about the author and apply basic parameters - resolution, frame rate, color background, transparency, project dimensions, etc.

This is what the workspace of the new project we just created looks like.

Description of basic features

Basic functions are available without special training - everything is clear, the interface in Russian is understandable. For amateurs who need to edit a video quickly and without any special effects, VSDC will be the best option.

So, with this video editor you can:

  • trim video and audio, break it into parts, connect parts together;
  • create separate tracks from audio and video elements, edit them separately;
  • add text or subtitles to the video;
  • Using the editor, you can record your computer desktop to create video instructions;
  • convert files ( VSDC converter supports more than 20 formats);
  • use over 70 video transition effects - page flip, fade in, frame overlay, slide fade, etc.;
  • scale the video - make objects larger or smaller;
  • The Snapshot function allows you to capture individual moments in a video.

Here, for example, is how text is superimposed on a video.

Professional Features

The developers have provided even more opportunities for professional editors. There are a lot of professional functions. We will talk about some of them - those that seem important and interesting to us.

So here's a short list professional opportunities VSDC:

  • The video editor supports 3D video processing;
  • You can adjust the color of the video using a gradient;
  • a large number of filters - blur (frame blur, stack blur, motion blur), filters like in Instagram, etc.;
  • in the editor you can work with masks and blending modes;
  • a lot of effects, including TV effects - jumping tape, overlaying noise and film crackling, imitation of old cinema, etc.;
  • the ability to combine objects and apply effects directly to the group;
  • good tools for audio editing: creating an amplitude effect, playing a track in reverse direction, simultaneous work with several tracks, etc.;
  • “Movement” function - movement of video objects along a trajectory specified by the user in real time;
  • chromakey function – removing the background using specified colors;
  • you can record voice, dub videos, edit videos in 2K and 4K resolution and much more.

Here, for example, is how they use chromakey in VSDC - they remove the green background in the video to leave only the person in the video or add some other background.

VSDC Video Editor Pro

The video editor can be upgraded to a Pro version. The main difference from free version– the ability to process videos at higher speeds (hardware acceleration). According to the developers, this is why users activate the paid version. Now it costs $20, the subscription period is for a year.

Look at the screenshot to see what other bonuses the owner receives paid subscription.

Welcome to the VSDC user community!

If you've never worked with non-linear video editors before, get ready for a whole new level of editing and almost limitless possibilities. However, before moving on to complex techniques and professional effects, it is worth starting with mastering a basic set of tools.

In this article, we will talk in detail about how to work in the VSDC video editor, starting with the most basic functions: splitting a video into fragments, trimming, text overlay, importing and exporting files.

By the way, we are constantly adding new functionality and release new versions of the program several times a year. Therefore, before you start, make sure that you have installed latest version VSDC from our official website. That is, from here.

How to Import Videos into VSDC

There are several ways to import files into VSDC. Firstly, as soon as you launch the program, you will see an “Import content” button on the start screen (see illustration above). This method is convenient because the program automatically detects the file parameters and adjusts the parameters of the entire project in accordance with them. Once you select a file from your PC through File Explorer, a pop-up window will appear where you can enter the project name, change the resolution, frame rate and other parameters. When all the data has been entered correctly, click “Accept”.

You can also add files to the project as needed directly from the work window. To do this, use the “Insert Object” buttons located at the top of the menu and on the left side (see image below). If you import files this way, notice the pop-up window with the object and layer position settings. Using the Layer Position menu, you determine whether the new file will be added to the current layer or to an adjacent one.

The Add Layer option will place the file on a new layer on top of the others. The Insert Layer option will place the file on a new layer directly below the selected one. The "Insert to Layer" option will add the file to the current layer sequentially.

And of course, you can use hotkey combinations:

  • Shift + I – to import an image
  • Shift + A – to import an audio file
  • Shift +V – to import a video file

How to split a file into fragments, rotate and trim video around the edges in VSDC

All basic operations with video – trimming, rotating, splitting – are done using the buttons in the “Delete and Split” quick access menu located at the top of the interface (illustration below).

The very first tool - scissors - allows you to quickly trim off excess and is convenient when you need to cut the beginning or end of a video with one click. Simply place the cursor at the point from which (or to which) you want to trim and select “Delete from the beginning of the object” or “Delete to the end of the object” in the drop-down menu to the right of the scissors icon.

If you need to break the video into parts, use the following icon - an image of a razor. This tool works in a similar way: you need to place the cursor at the appropriate moment on the timeline and click on the “Split into parts” button. Keep in mind: in order to delete one of the fragments, you first need to click on an empty space on the timeline to deselect the entire file (otherwise you will delete the entire file), and then select the desired fragment and click Delete. Detailed instructions for breaking videos into parts in VSDC have been published.

Finally, the tools menu includes two buttons for rotating the video 90 degrees. Everything here is quite intuitive: just select the file you want to expand and click on the icon with the appropriate direction. If you need to make a turn at a non-standard angle, we have written more for you.

How to Apply Effects and Add Transitions in VSDC

In VSDC you can create different types effects, many of which are applied in one click and do not require installation experience. The effects menu is located at the top of the program interface, in the “Video Effects” tab. Here you will find Instagram-style color filters, tone, contrast and brightness settings, transformation effects, transitions and transparency.

To apply an effect to a video, click on the fragment and select the desired effect from the menu. will appear on the timeline new inset, which includes all effects applied to the selected fragment. Here you can adjust the duration of the effect, the moment it appears and disappears. Other effect parameters can be adjusted in the Properties Window located on the right.

A similar rule applies to transitions. Place your cursor where you want the transition to begin, select the transition from the drop-down menu, and adjust the duration manually.

How to remove sound from video in VSDC

If you need to completely remove an audio track from a video file, do the following:

  • Click on the video clip right click mice
  • In the menu that opens, select “Properties”
  • Go to the Properties window that opens on the right
  • Scroll down the menu and find the "Audio Track" section
  • From the drop-down menu, select "Don't play sound"

You can also click the “Split object into video and audio” button (located there in the Properties Window) and as soon as the audio track appears on the timeline as separate file, click “Delete”.

How to Add Text Over a Video or Image in VSDC

VSDC has a built-in text editor with which you can create stylish titles and various effects using letters. To overlay text over a video in VSDC, go to the menu on the left side and select the “T” shaped icon. Select "Text" and place the cursor on work area where you want the text to be placed. Once you've finished typing, use the editor (top menu) to adjust size, color, font, and other settings - just as you would in a regular word processor.

You can move the text object using the mouse using the drag-and-drop method, and other parameters - including the moment of appearance, duration and disappearance - are configured in the Properties Window. Detailed instructions We published how to work with text in VSDC.

Before you export your video to VSDC, make sure everything looks the way you intended. To do this, use the red preview button above the timeline on the left. If the video freezes during playback, reduce the picture quality (drop-down menu to the right of the preview button). Freezing indicates that the computer does not have enough resources to process such a volume of information in real time. However, this does not in any way affect the export result or the quality of the saved video.

Once everything is ready, go to the “Export Project” tab and select the desired format. For your convenience, VSDC has a variety of export profiles pre-configured for various tasks. For example, if you plan to upload videos to YouTube, select "Internet" - "For YouTube" and the program will automatically apply best settings to your project. Typically, the file is saved in the “C:\Users\Owner\Videos\” folder. However, you can change both the location and the name of the file by clicking the "Change Name" button located on the right under the preview window.

After everything, click on the red round button “Export project” and wait until the conversion process is completed. If during the export process you see a banner asking you to use Pro version, you can either purchase an annual subscription or continue working in the free version by clicking on the “Continue” button in the lower right corner.
